Darrow Brook Fairies
How I met the Darbries:

Part Eight
So those are some of the reasons that no one has seen a Darbrie. Not counting that few people know where Darrow Brook even is. And fewer people have ever walked along it, with even fewer that have ventured into the swampy areas, and no one ever tromped all over the swamp (well you can’t) and looked for near invisible hidey-holes.
Knowing all this now, don’t even try. An expedition would be even stupider. You can’t find them. They find you! Some big strong handsome man might think I’ll go out there. They’d love to meet me. The little nerd with glasses has a better shot at meeting Darbries, and his chances are close to zero. First of all, they aren’t girls, they’re fairies. They don’t care about your looks or strength. I don’t think any of them would be into a love affair with a man, even if it was possible! Their wings would surely turn black.

Enough of that. I’ve kept it a secret, because the Darbries are too small, too timid, and too different to fit in with humans. Their daily lives and their odd ways would cause conflicts that Darbries always avoid. An example could be theft. Darbries can’t steal as they don’t have possessions. Someone would quickly accuse one of them and the humans would try to imprison a Darby, when even trying to capture one of them would start a war. They would never give up on helping each other, and we would soon learn, if Darbries can die.
On the other side, people would exploit them. Probably on clothing. Darbries would make clothing, people would take to sell it, and Darbries would make more. Over and over people would exploit the Darbries. Darbries aren’t stupid, they just really wouldn’t care.

Lastly, I am selfish. I know something that apparently no one else ever knew. I knew their place needed to be secret, but I never encountered anyone I could trust with keeping the secret. I fully intended to tell my daughter on my death bed, knowing that she would not believe me, but would remember the story if ever it became important.
Now, all that has changed. The Darbries are going to relocate anyway soon. They are planning on splitting the clan. They envision two clans separate, but close enough for yearly visits and transfers. They realize that splitting up, would be best to ensure fairies do not go extinct. They don’t look forward to moving, but they do all look forward to having little Darbries. Yes, part of the plan involves doubling their numbers.

So that’s “why now”. I really hope this whole idea is going to work. Otherwise, it could go really bad for the Darbries.

So that’s the plan. I’m not going to preach on this anymore. Believe or disbelieve, it’s up to you. I won’t even try to affect your opinion.
